He has virtually taken the gangster genre of film and made it his own. For my presentation I am going to be looking into how Scorsese done this. I will be looking into the elements and unique style of Scorsese's films which have led to him becoming one of the biggest and most famous auteurs in film.

I will be looking into three Scorsese films for my research. My main focus film is the classic Goodfellas. My other two films are Casino and Mean Streets.

Goodfellas and Casino are very similar in many aspects, in a way they are practically the same film. From cinematography to mise-en-scene, from story lines to characters.

Personally I feel that Scorsese is a perfect auteur to look into. This is as I find the gangster/mob genre very interesting. I find that analyzing Scorsese as an auteur is easy as most of his films are similar.

Once I have fully analyzed my three movies I will be comparing the elements and themes involved and showing how Scorsese has used them to make the gangster genre his own, proving my hypothesis of how Scorsese has had a huge influence on the gangster/mob genre.

Martin Scorsese...

My hypothesis: How did Martin Scorsese influence the gangster/mob genre of movies?

I am going to focus on researching themes and elements involved in Martin Scorsese's movies. my main focus film is going to be Goodfellas. If I see a film is directed by him then I know that it will be good as all of his films are very similar in ways however also very good.

Themes in a Scorsese film are often very reocurring for example the actors that he uses. Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci etc, also recently Leonardo Di Caprio. Most of Scorsese’s films are set in deprived areas of New York and often involve Italian/Americans. There are usually links with the Mafia. Scorsese’s films can often be described as ‘Mob’ Films.
I will be analyzing Taxi Driver, Mean Streets and Raging bull. As I feel that they are all similar in terms of themes and settings.

I will also look at Goodfellas and Casino as the themes in these two films are also identical. For example the cast is very similar. It is about the criminal underworld of a high powered gangster organization.
